well there are 9 * 9 square, where each row can be filled in 9! ways, and each column 9!
    so I would say 9!*9!

This is not a well-defined question. If you’re talking about all arrangements such that the puzzle is solvable, excluding puzzles that are mirrors/rotations of other puzzles, the number would probably be in the millions, if not greater.

The post above is wrong because there are only certain ways that the numbers can be inserted. If you have to violate those rules, you don’t have a valid puzzle.

9 squares up and down. 9 possibilites for each square.
(9! is 9x8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1) so 9! multiplyed by 9! (or in maths terms9!*9! which is
    131,681,894,400
One hundred and thirty one billion, sixhundred and eighty one million, eighthundred and nintey four thousand, four hundred and nothing. (BTW Sudoku has nothing got to do with maths it could be letters or symbold and was invented in europe Norway so switserland i think)
